freedb lookup and spotty internet service
Jan 11th, 2006, 10:38pm

Just ended up with a stack of 15 CDs batch ripped with no artist/recording/track information.  Apparently, DSL maintenance was going on this evening.  I'll restart the batch in the morning.

It got me thinking (again)...

Would it be possible in Batch mode to continuously retry contacting freedb (e.g. once every 60 seconds) when no connection can be made?  Making this an option would be better, but if not, I think retrying would be the appropriate default behavior.  The # of retries before successfully contacting freedb or batch mode being cancelled should be logged as well.

Note that if freedb *is* contacted and no match is found for the CD, it *should* go ahread and do what it does now: ripping the CD using the unique hash in the artist/recording/track information.

Yes...  FreeDB retries are on the to-do list.  See also this post by Shigadeyo.

How long is that to-do list now...?   Wink

hehehe.  More importantly (in my world): how short is my stack of unripped CDs now?  Down to about 100 of 600 left... Smiley

Wow, you went through 500 CDs that quickly?  I have to admit, I haven't even started ripping my own collection yet!   embarrassed  Actually I'm holding out for my next project, Audiophile Superior.  Pardon the plug!  Smiley

I was able to bang out just over 1000 in two weeks using Riptastic!, my 7 x Nakamichi 5.16 tower, and the occassional one at a time in my main computer.  This was definitely the software and setup I was looking for.  Too bad I have at least 1000 more or so to go!

Man, if I would have known about this before, I may have waited too.  Ah, probably not!  As long as it supports CD changers, I can always re-rip!

I'm going to bump this suggestion again.  I never fails - once every few days or so I get an Internet blip and on the DSL connection which stops the batch ripping process.  It really sucks if this happens somewhere in the first few changers as the rest of the night or day is wasted. Sad

Yeah.  The DupliQ/SN25/Baxter devices really do make it painless.  Sometimes as I was leaving the apartment, I'd take whatever discs were in the output tray out, and then pop another 10-20 discs under the current stack in the input bin.

As the script I was using evolved, it went faster and faster with fewer "surprises" when I'd check on it.

If I were actually ripping on a recent vintage desktop instead of a somewhat CPU starved Thinkpad X40, and was therefore encoding at the same speed as extraction, I would have finished a day or two earlier.

I suspect I might be able to recoup *some* of the device cost by ripping cds to mp3s for people I know at half the going rate of $1/cd the mail-order services charge and burning them to dvd-r discs for them.  It'll take a while, though.  Especially if I am lazy about it.Smiley

And holding out for your next project?  After seeing the date of the document (over 3 years ago), I suspected I should just make due with Riptastic!  Smiley Smiley Smiley

Yeah yeah yeah, I know.  It's hard to pay the bills and get to work on my dream project at the same time.  Sigh.  I'm open to financial support though!   Tongue
