AIFF Encoder Options

The AIFF Encoder is used to create AIFF files. To use it, simply select Riptastic! AIFF Encoder from the Encoder Selector before ripping.

AIFF is a common uncompressed audio file format, and is compatible with Apple Macintosh computers. Note that AIFF files can contain ID3 Tags, so the AIFF format is ideal for importing uncompressed audio into software that understands ID3 tags, such as iTunes.

The AIFF Encoder has one configuration option:

  • Bits per sample - AIFF files are uncompressed. However you have the option of encoding as a 16 bit or 8 bit AIFF file. Here "16 bit" and "8 bit" refer to the number of bits per sample per channel. Audio data on a CD is 16 bits, so when you save as a 16-bit AIFF file, you get the exact audio data as it exists on the CD. When you save as an 8-bit AIFF, the file is half the size, but the aural quality is diminished by the loss of information. You can experiment by ripping the same track twice, once as 16-bit and again as 8-bit, and play them back to compare the quality.
