MP3 Encoder Options

The MP3 Encoder is used to create MP3 files. Simply select Riptastic! MP3 Encoder from the Encoder Selector before ripping. Note that use of the MP3 Encoder requires Windows Media Player version 10 or later to have been installed, otherwise the MP3 Encoder features may be limited or nonexistent.

At right is the MP3 Encoder general configuration options. Use the Audio Quality slider to choose the desired audio quality. Choosing a quality setting closer to the Lower end on the left will yield in smaller files of lower aural quality. Choosing a quality setting closer to the Higher end on the right will yield in larger files of higher aural quality.

Below the slider the bit rate, sample rate, and mode (either stereo or mono) are displayed to aid in selection. “Bit rate” simply means the average hard disk space consumed per unit time by a file. The value is shown in kbps (kilobits per second). For example, a one-minute file at 128 kbps would be about 960,000 bytes (128,000 bits/second * 60 seconds/minute * 1/8 bytes/bit). Generally higher bit rates result in higher quality and larger files, while lower bit rates result in lower quality but smaller files.

Use the Advanced button for additional configuration options (see below).

MP3 Encoder Advanced Settings

Shown above are the MP3 Encoder Advanced Settings.

  • Mode—Selects either stereo or mono encoding. Stereo is the default.

  • Show alternative sample rates—Check this option to permit selection of additional available encoding sample rates such as 32 kHz and 48 kHz. Normally you won't need this option.

  • Reset to Defaults—Clicking this button restores all MP3 Encoder settings to their initial default values.
